What is DVT?

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is when a clot forms in a deep vein. A deep vein is a vein that accompanies an artery. DVT affects mainly the veins in the lower leg and the thigh. It involves the formation of a clot in the larger veins of the area. This clot may interfere with circulation, and it may break off and travel through the blood stream, resulting in a Pulmonary Embolism (PE). Pulmonary Embolisms are fatal and can lodge in the brain, lungs, heart, or other area, causing severe damage to that organ.

Risks include prolonged sitting, bedrest, or immobilization (such as on long plane or car trips), recent surgery or trauma (especially hip, knee or gynecological surgery), fractures and childbirth.

Symptoms:
Pain in one leg
Tenderness in one leg
Swelling (edema) in legs
A feeling of warmth or hotness in one legĀ
Change in skin color, redness other discoloration
